Internet customers of Cascade Access can now take advantage of personal web page hosting! This service is provided as an added feature on all of our Internet accounts. No matter which package you have, you receive 5MB of space for a personal web page.

Following are the instructions for creating and posting your web site.

Website Basics
Web pages do not exist in a page format like pages in books. They are made up of text, links and images that are constructed with a simple programming language called HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language). There are many books, classes and online internet sites available to help you learn HTML. There are also programs that will "write" pages for you. Many of these programs may be downloaded for evaluation, so you have an opportunity to try the software to see if it is right for you. Even if using one of these programs, you should have a basic understanding of HTML, so you can edit pages as needed without reconstructing the whole page.

You will find several resources and tutorials by searching the web, and we have provided some links in our "Where to Get Help with Your Website" section below, to help get you started.

Once you have finished creating your home page (the page people will see first when they visit your website), you must save it with the file name "index.html" before posting it to the Internet.

How To Post Your Website

Posting a website is a process of putting all your files onto your host's server so that others can see your website.

The most common way to post your files onto the web is to use a protocol called FTP (File Transfer Protocol). If you do not already have this type of program, you can download it from the Internet. A few sites where you will find an FTP program available for download are:

www.tucows.com
www.download.com
www.microsoft.com

When you use the FTP program for the first time, click on the "New" button on the right of the screen and enter the following information:

  • Profile Name: This can be anything you want it to be. This is just a name for the profile.
  • Host Name: This needs to be cascadeaccess.com and must be all lowercase, spelled exactly as shown.
  • User ID: This needs to be the first part of your e-mail address. For example, if your e-mail address is xyz890@cascadeaccess.com, enter "xyz890" on this line.
  • Password: Here you enter the password you use when you log on or check your mail. If you want to save your password so that you do not have to enter it each time you update your web page, check "Save Pwd."

Please Note: The images shown below are from a WS-FTP version of FTP. While the appearance may differ slightly from the version you choose, the format for entering the information will be the same.

Session Properties

Once you have entered this information, click the Apply button to save the settings. Then click the OK button and as long as all information was entered correctly, you will automatically be logged in and ready to post your web site. The screen will look similar to the picture below.

WS_FTP

The left window shows files that are on your computer, while the right window shows files that are on your host's server. The host may already have a few things on this section of the server. Do not make any changes or delete any of this information.

In the left window, find where you saved the files for your web page, highlight one of them and click the arrow in the middle of the window that points to the right. This will transfer a copy of the file to the host's server. When it has finished the transfer, you will hear a tone and then see the file appear on the right hand side of the screen. Do this for each file, directory or folder you have created for your website. Once all the files show on the right hand side of the screen, you will be able to view your website.

What Will the Address Be For My Website?

The address for your website is determined by your username/e-mail address.

Your address will be http://www.cascadeaccess.com/~yourname, where yourname is the first part of your e-mail address.

For example, if your e-mail address is xyz890@cascadeaccess.com then your website address will be http://www.cascadeaccess.com/~xyz890.
