I received a virus warning in an e-mail, what is this?

Although there are thousands of viruses discovered each year, there are still some that only exist in the imaginations of the public and the press.

If you receive an e-mail warning of a virus, check the comprehensive list of hoax viruses that do not exist at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html

It is best to ignore the messages regarding these hoaxes, as passing them on only serves to further propagate them.

It is also wise to protect yourself and your equipment against actual viruses by installing some antivirus software.

Viruses?

Cascade Access strongly recommends AntiVirus software for your PC. New Viruses come out on a regular basis. Therefore you need to keep your antivirus current. Antivirus is typically sold as a program and a yearly subscription. This subscription allows you to get updates. AntiVirus without updates will have no effect on any new viruses.Symantec,McAfee,Trend Micro, Panda are just a few.

Free Antivirus for Personal Use is available from Avast

Spyware?

Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Here are a couple of utilities to remove spyware:

Lavasoft's AdAware

Spybot's Search & Destroy

Popups?

Popups can be eliminated with the use of a pop-up killer program. There are some great stand alone programs that will stop these pesky popups, but there also some free ones.Google Toolbar,Dogpile Toolbar and for a small free StopZilla (which is a stand one) but also included a Spyware filter.
