How does DSL work?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) use your existing phone wiring to transmit data by using the upper sound frequencies over the line. Filters are required to be installed on the phone lines that have telephones so that you don't hear the DSL and your phone call doesn't interfere with the phone call.

Please visit HowStuffWorks.com for a more detailed explanation.

What are these filters for?

When DSL (ADSL) is provided over voice lines, all devices in the house except the DSL modem must be connected through filters. The filter protects the devices from high frequency noise. They are low-pass filters.

What is NAT?

Network Address Translation. In a nutshell NAT takes your packets going out or in to and from the web and replaces your machines IP address (A Private IP Address) with the one provided by your ISP (A Public IP Address). The reason this is needed is due to the lack of space public IP address.

Can I use a brand-x DSL modem?

We support the G.Lite ITU G.992.2 standard thus a G.992.2 compliant modem should work with our DSL service. We can support PPPoE (RFC 2516) or PPPoA (RFC 2364) standards.

Many people have asked specifically about the CISCO 675 modem which is offered by US WEST. The 675 is not a DMT G.Lite modem and it is not supported. The Cisco 678 G.Lite (The 678 is a DMT Full Rate modem and would need a software download to operate in G.Lite mode).

(Although CascadeAccess can provide you with the necessary account information needed we cannot support other vendors modems and are only providing this as an informational note.)

Canusers connect to me from the internet?

Please check out this link to test the security of your PC connected to the internet https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2. Depending on the service you have users may be able to connect to you if you have file sharing unabled. As security step we recommend you do the following:

Windows 9x/ME operating systems are fairly easy to protect with only a few simple precautions. These measures are designed to protect your system from remote security issues and do not include day-to-day usage practices (such as don’t open attachments from people you don’t know.)

1) INTALL VIRUS PROTECTION.This cannot be emphasized enough.95% of all security related problems seen at Astalavista could have been avoided with virus protection. Visit http://www.sophos.com for more information and to get your virus software.

2) Turn off File and Print Sharing. You can do this through the network control panel. It is simply a matter of un-checking 2 boxes. Almost all of the remote security issues with Windows 9x/ME revolve around File and Print Sharing. Windows 9x/ME are not server operating systems and should not be used as such.

a. If you MUST enable File and Print Sharing then:

i. Make sure all of your shares are password protect.

ii. Make sure the invisible “$” shares on the drives themselves are either removed or password protected.

iii. Never, under any circumstances, allow write privileges to your shares. If read only access in not good enough then you should be working with a file server, not sharing files from a desktop machine. Why shouldn’t you allow write access? Because once you do your system’s integrity is exposed to anyone who either has the password or who can crack the password, which is much easier than you may think. There are a number of worms going around which travel through file shares to which they can get easy access, all they need is write privileges.

3) Regularly check http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ for operating system updates. You can install the Critical Update Notification to inform you when there are new updates, so you don’t have to worry about remembering.

4) Install all Outlook Security Patches http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Out2ksec.aspx

5)You may want to consider a personal firewall. However, personal firewalls can be somewhat complex and intrusive…and really their need is greater the more access you allow to your machine. For instance, if you enable File and Print Sharing the need for a personal firewall increases greatly.

6) Test your configuration: Scan yourself via the web. Shields UP! DSL Reports Security for Cable Networks

Multiple machines on the internet?

Depending onwhich Modem you are using will determine the best way to dothis.

InfinilinkModem users that are using the CA-CONNECT software, or XP's PPPoEclient would need a DSL Router (such as a Linksys, Dlink, Etc.) these devices support PPPoE and you put the username and password in the router itself. The PC's then are no longer required to run the CA-Connect software. In addition to that most DSL Routers act as firewalls, preventing other users from connecting to your machine.

StarSmartModem users would need a HUB or SWITCH to connect multiple machines,These DSL modems are also routers.

VisionNetModem users would need a HUB or SWITCH to connect multiple machines,These DSL modems are also routers.

The other way to do it is with Microsoft's ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), If you have Windows98 Second Edition, ME or 2000 you can use ICS. For further help on ICS go to the Microsoft's webpage and search for ICS or Internet Connection Sharing.

What about installing CA-Connect on more than one machine? (This may work, but it is NOT supported by the makers of the CA-Connect software.) The only supported way to use multiple machines is by doing either of the above.

Windows XP?

Windows XP now has PPPoE Native to the OS (CA-Connect is no longer used). Click here to view the instructions.
